The Johor State Constitution, which was proclaimed on 4 April 1895, is a set of laws and regulations necessary for the administration and management of the government. In addition, it contains various Articles on the confirmation of a sovereign and the mechanics of succession to the throne.

Article 2 of the First Part stipulates the Sovereign (including The Heir and The Other Heirs) shall be a person of the Malay race, of royal blood, a descendent of Johor sovereigns, a male, and of the Muslim faith.
Article 3(1) of the First Part requires a person eligible to be confirmed as sovereign after Abu Bakar to be a descendant of the body and flesh of Abu Bakar truly genuine and lawfully begotten, a son, grandson and so on of the male line, first one generation after another.
Article 3(2) of the First Part provides if at any time the lineal descendants of Abu Bakar should be extinct, a male of the descendant of Temenggong Ibrahim may be chosen.
Article 3(3) of the First Part stipulates if there are no more descendants of Temenggong Ibrahim, a male descendant of Temenggong Abdul Rahman may be chosen.
